Dr Michel Murr is a Professor of Surgery at the University of South Florida, a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, and a leading authority in bariatric surgery nationwide. Prior to his appointment at USF, Dr Murr was a Gastrointestinal Surgery Scholar and Research Fellow with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He pioneered laparoscopic gastric bypass in the Tampa Bay area, and oversees one of the nation’s busiest academic bariatric surgery centers.

He has done more than 1,500 bariatric surgeries, as well as extensive research on obesity and its surgical treatment. He has published more than ninety peer-reviewed papers and chapters on the subject, and serves on editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals.

Currently, Dr Murr is principal investigator of numerous clinical trials and the director of the JCAHO-accredited Center of Excellence bariatric surgery program at the Tampa General Hospital.  Recently, he organized and hosted the USF Health Obesity Action Summit on June 8, 2008 to unite key leaders in legislation, policy, and community efforts in progressive partnerships between local, state and federal organizations.  Dr Murr routinely participates in training other surgeons in weight loss procedures and has served as Director and Co-Director for continuing professional education courses on obesity. His comprehensive multi-disciplinary bariatric team performs over 300 weight loss surgeries a year.
